No. 5 LSU Sweeps Lady Eagles
BATON ROUGE, La. ? A run-ruled contest followed by a close game summarized the doubleheader featuring the Southern Miss softball team and No. 5 LSU, this evening at Tiger Park. The Tigers won the opener, 10-0 in five innings, and the closer, 2-0.
Felicia Gonzales (7-9) gave up two runs and two hits in game two for Southern Miss. She fanned seven Tigers, and both hits were produced by Trina Peel, who stroked two triples to claim the Southeastern Conference record for three-baggers in a season with 12.
The Lady Eagles outhit the Tigers in final game, 5-2. Amanda Brown was two-for-three in nightcap.
Peel scored the first run off a wild pitch in the first inning. Her second triple plated Blair Smith in the fifth for the only runs of the game.
Kristin Schmidt (13-3) pitched the shutout, giving up five hits and striking out 11.
Britni Sneed (20-5) recorded her third no-hitter of the season in game one. The All-American went five innings and tallied 11 strikeouts and three walks. She punched out eight consecutively.
Megan Steege finished the opener, hitting a perfect three-for-three with a run and two RBIs. Christy Connor and Erin Johnson each batted two-for-three, and both scored a run, while Connor recorded an RBI and Johnson claimed two RBIs.
The Tigers scored seven runs in the second inning off the production of four doubles and seven total hits. Steege collected a single and a double in the frame, along with a run scored and an RBI.
Jessica Holaway (12-8) went the distance for Southern Miss in game one. She gave up 10 earned runs on 12 hits and two walks, fanning two.
Southern Miss (25-25) will host LSU (37-8) next week, on Wednesday, April 24, in a doubleheader, starting at 5 p.m.
