Jennifer Reach singled to left field, allowing Suzanne Olcott to score the winning run. Lacy Prejean shot a solo home run to left for the Tide?s initial score.
The Lady Eagles outhit Alabama, 8-6, producing at least a base knock in every inning except the seventh. On three occasions, Southern Miss placed runners in scoring position with one out, but two of those situations were halted by double plays. The Lady Eagles left eight runners stranded in the game.
Amanda Brown scored the Lady Eagles' only run, in the fifth inning, off a wild pitch by relief pitcher Jennifer Wright. With one out and Heather Bell standing at second base, Channika Gant appeared to have stroked the game-tying hit, but Reach at shortstop made the high reach and caught the line drive and threw out Bell at second for the double play.
Kenya Peters hit a perfect three-for-three in the game, collecting her 10th double on the season. Laura Davis finished the game hitting one-for-one with two sacrifice hits. Six Lady Eagles collected hits, as the team batted 8-for-22 in the game.
Erin Wright (10-3) got the win for Alabama. She pitched four innings, giving up five hits and three walks, while punching out six. Shelley Laird came in relief to collect her fourth save on the year, recording one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
Felicia Gonzales (7-8) went the distance for the Lady Eagles, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks and collecting five strikeouts.
Southern Miss travels to Baton Rouge, La., tomorrow night, Thursday, April 18, facing No. 5 LSU in a doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m. The game will be featured on a ?live stats? broadcast on SouthernMiss.com.
