Golden Eagle Baseball Travels to South Alabama on Tuesday
The game will be broadcast on 107 FM, The Zoo, in Hattiesburg and on www.SouthernMiss.com for fans outside the Hattiesburg area. Lance Pittman will handle the play-by-play duties with the pregame show beginning 15 minutes prior to the first pitch.
Under the direction of Corky Palmer, Southern Miss is 6-5 against South Alabama after defeating the Jaguars, 7-3, earlier this season on Feb. 19. The Jaguars lead the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, 45-19, in one of the longer series in the school's history.
The Golden Eagles are 17-7 after sweeping Cincinnati this past weekend, 2-0, 17-3 and 8-0. South Alabama pushed its record to 16-9 after sweeping Arkansas State in a Sunbelt Conference weekend, 5-4, 8-1 and 9-8. Southern Miss is 6-4 in its last 10 games, and South Alabama is 8-2.
Southern Miss is currently hitting .318 as a team, has 84 extra base hits (61 doubles, three triples and 20 homers) and has stolen 19 bases. The Golden Eagles are led by junior outfielder Jeff Cook, who is currently hitting with a team-leading .394 batting average with two doubles, one triple, and a team-leading eight home runs and 27 RBIs. Allen Winningham is second on the team, batting .366 with a team-leading 11 doubles, one triple, four homers and 21 RBIs. Carlos Velasquez is hitting .364 with eight doubles, one triple, three homers, 16 RBIs and a team-leading seven stolen bases.
Senior righthander Daniel Stewart will take the mound for Southern Miss. He is 1-2 with a 6.21 ERA in 29.0 innings pitched. He has given up 26 runs, 20 earned, on 43 hits, walked six and struck out 29 batters. In his last outing at Ole Miss last Tuesday, he pitched a season-high seven innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits, walked two and struck out eight.
South Alabama is currently hitting .325 as a team, has 87 extra base hits (56 doubles, one triple and 27 homers) and has stolen 45-of-58 bases. Top hitters for the Jaguars are Janson Rayborn, who is leading the Jaguars, hitting .386 with 10 doubles, two homers and 21 RBIs. Ryan Mulhern is hitting .366 with 10 doubles, five homers and 26 RBIs, and T.J. Touchstone is hitting .345 with six doubles and eight stolen bases.
The Jaguars are sending either righthander Scott Mularz or righhander Caleb Crosby to the mound. Mularz is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in four innings of work. He has given up four runs, three earned, on four hits, struck out eight and walked two. Crosby is 0-0 with a 20.77 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched. He has given up 11 runs, 10 earned, on six hits, walking eight and striking out four.
After Tuesday's game with South Alabama, Southern Miss hosts the highly-ranked Houston Cougars in a Conference USA weekend series in Hattiesburg, Miss., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game at 2 p.m., and Sunday's will take place at 1 p.m.
