Southern Miss Men's Tennis Downs Louisiana-Monroe, 6-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team won five of six singles matches and two-of-three doubles matches to down Louisiana-Monroe, 6-1, today, at Tatum Park. The Golden Eagles raised its record to 4-7 on the season.
Miikka Kangas defeated Bartez Dabrowski, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and David Jansson downed Paul Newman, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, giving Southern Miss the early 2-0 lead. Louisiana-Monroe's Mark Edney defeated Juanjo Martin, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, cutting the Golden Eagles lead by one.
The Golden Eagles responded by winning the No. 4-6 singles matches. David Canudes won at No. 4 singles, defeating Stanley Nevolovich, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, Uwe Gneiting downed Bart Fremin, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles and Nicolas Carteret won at No. 6 singles, defeating Greg Brenvena, 6-0, 6-4, giving Southern Miss a 5-1 lead.
Louisiana-Monroe's Newman and Edney defeated Southern Miss' Gneiting and Martin, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles before the Golden Eagles won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to win the point and the match, 6-1. Carteret and Kangas downed Dabrowski and Nevolovich, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles, and Jansson and Canudes won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, over Fremin and Brenvena.
Southern Miss travels to Irvine, Cal., next week for the Cal. Irvine Anteater Invitational on Thursday, March 28, through Sunday, March 31.
