Workout No. 3 Is In The Books
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss got in its third spring football workout Friday, ended the two hour-plus session with the first scrimmage work of the spring and the highlight of that short session was the running of Derrick Nix.
"I saw Derrick lower the shoulder a couple of times, take on tacklers and pick up the extra yards that are so important," said Head Coach Jeff Bower. "His very first run was a good one, and there were times I'm not sure the defense ever got him down. It was great to see him back.
"I think the players were excited to get the pads on and hit on each other a little bit. There were some good licks passed, and we had really good enthusiasm and worked hard throughout. We've made good progress in the three workouts we've gotten in this week."
Because of a rained out Wednesday practice, the weekend practice schedule was adjusted and the team now will work at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, in what would be a normal scrimmage day, and then start Sunday's workout at 2:30 and scrimmage at 3 o'clock. That will give the Eagles five first-week practices, of the 15 spring workouts allowed by the NCAA, as the team works toward a busy April 12-13 EagleFest weekend that will include the annual Black & Gold Spring Game at 1 p.m., in Roberts Stadium.
The Eagles will work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week and then take a brief Easter Holiday break.
Southern Miss opens the 2002 season Aug. 31, at home, against intrastate rival Jackson State.
