Eagles Change Weekend Football Practice Schedule
Hattiesburg, Miss. - After being weathered-out Wednesday, Southern Miss was back on the football practice field Thursday afternoon. That missed workout also forced the Golden Eagles to change their workout schedule for the remainder of the week.
Head Coach Jeff Bower's team now will work Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and the first scrimmage of the spring, originally set for Saturday morning, now has been moved to Sunday afternoon, at 3 o'clock in Roberts Stadium. Friday's session also will be the first of the spring in full pads.
Thursday's workout again concentrated on installing offense, and Bower saw plenty with which to be pleased. "We're putting in a lot, on both sides of the game, because we want to see how much the quarterbacks can handle in that regard, he said. "We're trying to get as much in as we can, the first four or five days, most of our schemes on both sides of the ball, and then we can concentrate on teaching. We've got a lot of people to get ready this spring."
Defensive back Tootie Myers, a Petal native who has been out of the game for awhile concentrating on a baseball career, and backup center Addaryl Edwards both caught Bower's eye after the Thursday session. "Considering how long Myers has been away from the game, he really has picked up things quickly," Bower said. "He's just a good athlete and can help us in a number of ways, defensive back, punt returner, kick returner. I think you'll see him get better every day out here as he gets more comfortable.
"And Addaryl has picked up a lot, quickly. We've moved him around too much, and I feel badly about that. But, I think we've found a home for him, where he can make a solid contribution."
The Golden Eagles open the 2002 season Aug. 31, at home, against intrastate rival Jackson State.
