Eagles Open Spring Football Workouts
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss opened spring football workouts this afternoon with a 150-minute session, the first of two NCAA-mandated "no-pads" workouts before the Golden Eagles get into full pads for the first time Thursday.
"I thought everyone came out and worked hard today," said Head Coach Jeff Bower. ""We put in a lot of stuff, especially on offense, and worked a little with the kicking game as well. It looked like we came back in good shape, and even though it was a warm day, for spring, I thought we were able to retain much of what we put in today.
"On offense, we were just throwing and catching, and I don't think any of our three quarterbacks really stood out over the others. It's just too early for that."
Bower's team will work five days this week, highlighted by the first scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning at 9.
In something of a change from recent spring sessions, the Golden Eagles quarterbacks are working without the benefit of the "red shirts" that typically signify "hands off" to the defense. "Since our quarterbacks are as inexperienced as they are, we need to look at them as close to game conditions as we can," said Bower. "I think it will be good for them, and will give the coaches a much better look at them."
The Golden Eagles open the 2002 season Aug. 31, at home, against intrastate rival Jackson State.
