Lady Eagles Split with Saint Louis
Melanie Hymel went two-for-three in game two, with a run and two RBIs. |
Former Lady Eagle Nicole Bohnenstiehl (5-3) got the win for Saint Louis in the opener, pitching a two-hit shutout and claiming seven strikeouts and three walks. USM starter Melissa Cundiff (3-7) gave up only four hits and one walk, with the unearned run, and recorded six strikeouts.
The game was scoreless after four innings. With two outs in the top of the fifth, the Billikens had runners on the corners and pulled the double steal, when Adrienne May lured a throw by catcher Kenya Peters to second base and allowed Erin Jeffery to race home for the only run of the first game.
Peters claimed redemption in the nightcap, as her homer in the bottom of the sixth broke the 2-2 tie and ignited a three-run rally. Melanie Hymel, who went two-for-three in finale, added a two-RBI double in the frame, scoring Laura Smith and Sarah Boyd, who also stroked a two-for-three performance.
Saint Louis opened game two by scoring two runs in the first. Bohnenstiehl?s infield single allowed Jeffery to cross the plate, and May reached home on Kalee Reichert?s ground out.
Hymel scored in the bottom of the first, off Channika Gant?s single up the middle, and Tammy Edwards ended a personal hitting slump (1-for-20, in the previous six appearances) by smashing her third homer of the season in the second inning, tying the game at 2-2.
USM pitcher Jessica Holaway (6-4) retired 19-consecutive batters after giving up two hits in the first inning. Beth Puttcamp ended the streak with two outs in the seventh, with a bunt single, but Holaway finished the three-hitter, giving up two unearned runs and one walk, and striking out five.
The final game on Sunday, March 17, will determine the series winner. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., at Timberton Park.
