Golden Eagle Men?s Tennis Team Defeats Tennessee-Chattanooga
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men?s tennis team defeated the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, 5-2, today, at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club.
Jason Ontog/Tim Kutschera (UTC) def. J.J. Martin/Nicolas Carteret (USM), 9-8, at the No. 1 doubles spot, while David Jansson/David Canudas (USM) def. Fabian Bechara/Thomas Krizat (UTC), 8-6, at the No. 2 doubles spot. Tennessee-Chattanooga clinched the doubles point when John Hangstefe/Kyle True (UTC) def. Miikka Kangas/David Terol (USM), 8-6, taking the early 1-0 lead.
The match started to turn for the Eagles when Canudas (USM) def. Bechara (UTC), 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 singles spot, improving the score to 1-1. Kangas (USM) def. Ontog (UTC), 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot, while Carteret (USM) def. Dickerson (UTC), 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Jansson (USM) clinched the match for the team when he defeated Hangstefe (UTC), 6-4, 6-3.
?I thought the guys did a great job of fighting back after losing the doubles point to beat a good team,? said Southern Miss Head Coach Teddy Viator. The Eagles? record now improves to 2-4 on the year. The team will go on the road to the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas Nev., on Mar. 13-17.
