Southern Miss Soccer Signs Two
Stephens |
Defensive midfielder Micah Stephens, of Alvarado, Texas, and outside midfielder Chelsey Brown, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, both signed letters-of-intent to play for Southern Miss. The two players are the first members of the second signing class in the Clark era.
As a senior at Alvarado High School, Stephens is having a successful season. She has already scored over 50 goals as a forward this year, and has scored over 100 in her four-year career with the team. Stephens also plays on the D'Feeters Soccer Club team, which advanced to the final four of the National Club Team Tournament.
"Micah is expected to be an impact player for us," Clark said. "She has great versatility, and has played on one of the top four clubs teams in the nation."
Academically, Stephens ranks as the top student of a 181 seniors at Alvarado.
"I think she is capable of contributing to the Southern Miss team," former D'Feeters Club Trainer Carla Chin-Baker said. "She is a solid player, and a great person with a lot of leadership."
Stephens chose Southern Miss over Southern Methodist, Texas A&M and North Texas.
"I got along well with all of the girls on the team," Stephens said. "It just seems like a good place for me to be. I come from a small town, so Hattiesburg is the right size for me."
Brown has participated in the Canadian U-19 National Team Camp and was the most valuable player for her high school team at Dr. Martin LeBoldus in Regina. Her high school team has advanced to the city championships for the past two seasons. She has also been on the provincial team for the past four years.
"Chelsey is a very good athlete," Clark said. "She has good speed and brings a tremendous amount of pedigree to the program. She is also expected to be an immediate impact player."
"Chelsey is a hard-working player," Dr. Martin LeBoldus Coach Ben Leung added. "She gives 110 percent every time she steps on the field. She will be a workhorse for the team, and will do whatever it takes to help the team be successful."
As it did with Stephens, the team atmosphere played a big part in Brown's choice of Southern Miss.
"I had some interest from other schools, but when I visited Southern Miss, I knew it was the right place for me," Brown said. "They are a real team and included me a lot."
The Lady Eagles finished the 2001 season with a 9-7 overall record, the third-straight winning season in the program's short five-year history.
