Salukis Slam Lady Eagles, 9-3
STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team picked up its first loss of the season in the team?s opening game of the Bulldog Classic. Southern Illinois smashed 16 hits off the Lady Eagles, winning the contest, 9-3.
Kelly Creek went four-for-four with four RBIs to lead Southern Illinois, as five Salukis collected multiple hits, including Haley Viefhaus (2-for-4), Maria Damico (3-for-4), Katie Jordan (2-for-4) and Elissa Hopkins (2-for-4)
Heather Bell led the Lady Eagles, hitting three-for-three with a solo home run to centerfield. Melanie Hymel went two-for-three, and Amanda Brown was one-for-three with two RBIs.
Southern Illinois (1-0) scored four runs in the top of the first, off seven singles. The Salukis added a run in the second when Creek singled to center and scored Maria Damico.
Southern Miss (2-1) got on the scoreboard in the fourth, when Brown?s single scored Auriel Jenkins and Heather Bell. Bell came up in the fifth and blasted a shot beyond the 220-mark in straight centerfield. It was the Lady Eagles first home run of the season.
Damico came up in the sixth and sent a solo shot beyond center as well. Creek picked up her fourth RBI of the game, when her single up the middle scored Jordan.
Southern Illinois added two more runs in the seventh. Haley Viefhaus scored Karrie Fortman with a single down the right field line, and Viefhaus reached the plate off Laura Smith?s error.
Southern Miss faces Colorado State this evening, in the Lady Eagles? second game of the Bulldog Classic. Starting time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
