Rams Win 3-1, Lady Eagles Lose Second Straight
STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team experienced its second-straight loss on the day, losing to Colorado State, 3-1, in the Lady Eagles? second game of Mississippi State?s Bulldog Classic.
Melanie Mahoney drove in two runs in the fifth inning on her double to left field, giving the Rams a 3-0 lead. She went one-for-three on the night with two RBIs, and also pitched the win, giving up one run on four hits.
Both Kerry Farrell and Kai Stone went two-for-three for Colorado State (2-5). Stone collected a run scored and an RBI.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Eagles (2-2) set up a potential rally, as Melanie Hymel collected her second triple of the season. Channika Gant followed with a double to score Hymel.
Kenya Peters and Tammy Edwards got on base after pitches hit both hitters. Heather Bell then faced bases loaded, but lined out to the shortstop on a 1-2 pitch.
USM pitcher Jessica Holaway gave up three earned runs on seven hits. She walked two and struck out six.
Both teams compete tomorrow in the Bulldog Classic. Southern Miss battles the host Mississippi State at noon and holds a rematch with Colorado State at 2 p.m. The Rams will also challenge Southern Illinois at 4 p.m.
