Charlotte Defeats Lady Eagles, 3-1
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team lost its first conference road match in the last month, losing to Charlotte, 3-1, in Halton Arena.
Andrea Bush and Bridget Files each collected 14 kills, leading the Lady Eagles. Nicki Tribble added 10 kills, and Crystal Zane finished with 42 assists, 12 digs and three service aces. Melissa Votruba also recorded three aces.
Abby Szlanfucht led the Niners with 18 kills and recorded a double-double with 19 digs. Three other Niners finished with double-figure kills, including Lisa Newell (12), Courtney Burg (11) and Jessica Kelly, (11).
Southern Miss (14-12, 5-5) controlled game one early and led as much as five, 14-9, but the Niners used an 11-6 run to tie the game, 20-20. Charlotte (14-12, 5-4) took over down the stretch, winning the opener, 30-26.
Szlanfucht led the Niners with six kills in game one. Charlotte also used a solid defense with 26 team digs, and Szlanfucht led with eight. Amy Truong recorded five kills in game one for USM.
Charlotte won game two, 30-23. The Niners took over at 7-6 and never relinquished the lead, using four aces, four blocks and 16 kills to control the second game.
Kelly and Szlanfucht each collected five kills in game two to lead Charlotte. Files recorded six kills in the second game for the Lady Eagles.
Game three went to Southern Miss, 30-21. The Lady Eagles outhit the Niners in percentage, .289 to .088. Zane led the offensive attack, collecting three-straight aces.
The Niners won the match in game four, 30-27. Southern Miss played it tight throughout, never trailing by more than five and came within one down the stretch, 27-28. Charlotte?s solid hitting attack came through in the end.
Southern Miss remains on the road for competition, playing at Tulane on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
