Lady Eagles Finish Regular Season with Two Home Matches
The Southern Miss volleyball team closes the 2003 season with home matches against Saint Louis, on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., and against Memphis on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. Both contests will be held in the Payne Center.
The Lady Eagles (14-13, 5-6 in C-USA) are looking to end a two-match losing streak, as they fell to Charlotte, 1-3, and to Tulane, 1-3. Collecting two wins this weekend will give Southern Miss an over-.500 overall record, its first since 1998.
Andrea Bush leads the Lady Eagles with 429 kills, a 4.17 per game average. Bridget Files follows with 361 kills (3.47 a game) and leads the team with 108 blocks.
Senior Crystal Zane plays in the final two home matches of her career this weekend. She is nearing the school?s top 10 list for assists in a season, starting the weekend with 1,092 assists and needing seven more to pass her 2000 total (1,098). Zane also leads the team with 305 digs.
Southern Miss is 1-6 all time against Saint Louis (19-9, 9-3). The team?s sole victory over the Billikins came in 1997, 3-0. Since the win, the Lady Eagles have lost four-straight matches against SLU.
Colleen Hunter leads Saint Louis with 573 kills, a 5.31 per game average. She also leads in total blocks with 153.
Beth Middendorf leads SLU in assists with 1,013. Brooke Minniear holds the team dig title with 376.
Memphis (19-12, 4-7) leads the overall series with Southern Miss, 14-9. The Tigers won last year, 3-0, but the Lady Eagles won both matches in 2001, each ending 3-2.
Brittany Barnett has recorded 474 kills for the Tigers? best. Heather Watts has collected 1,437 assists and 332 digs to lead the team.
The Healthy Choice Conference USA Volleyball Tournament is next on the schedule for the Lady Eagles. They will travel to Chicago, Ill., for the event, being held Nov. 22-25.
