Lady Eagles Defeat Pirates, 3-0
GREENVILLE, N.C. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team defeated East Carolina, 3-0, in Williams Arena. The Lady Eagles (14-11, 5-4 in C-USA) used a .223 hitting percentage and nine service aces in their victory over the Pirates (6-20, 0-8), who recorded a .144 hitting percentage.
Bridget Files led the USM attack, collecting 13 kills and a .522 hitting percentage, with only one hitting error in the match. Andrea Bush recorded nine kills, and Melissa Votruba, making her first start on the season, added seven kills.
Crystal Zane led with 30 assists, and Amy Truong recorded four aces and eight digs. Katie Jannusch led the Pirates with six kills, and Pam Ferris collected a match-high 12 digs for East Carolina.
Game one featured a tight battle with seven ties and four lead changes. The Pirates held a 19-13 lead, but the Lady Eagles went on a 13-6 run and overtook ECU at 26-25. Down the stretch, Southern Miss controlled the lead to win, 30-27.
Southern Miss won the second game, 30-22. Game two experienced 10 ties early, but the Lady Eagles pulled away, using a 13-6 advantage to lead 26-19. USM added to the spread late in the game, using a .357 team attack percentage in the game with only three errors.
Southern Miss used a 6-1 run in game three to pull away from the Pirates in game three and lead, 19-12. The Lady Eagles were never threatened and won the match in game three, 30-18. East Carolina recorded a seven kills and seven hitting errors in the final game.
The tour of North Carolina continues for the Lady Eagles, as they play at Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m., central time.
