Lady Eagles Defeat TCU, 3-1
FORT WORTH, Texas ? The Southern Miss volleyball team extended its winning streak to three, claiming its second-consecutive conference match with a win over TCU, 3-1, here at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles (10-7 overall, 2-0 in C-USA) overcame a hard-fought loss in game one, 32-30, to win three straight, 30-25, 30-18, 31-29. Juniors Andrea Bush and Bridget Files led the charge, collecting 23 and 22 kills, respectively.
Bush ended the match with a .385 hitting percentage, claiming only three errors, and recorded a double-double which included her 12 digs. Files finished with a .513 hitting percentage, only two hitting errors, and six block assists.
Crystal Zane led Southern Miss with 58 assists and 17 digs. Nicki Tribble also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs, and Jazzmien Stephens finished in double figures with 10 kills.
Game one featured 13 ties and four lead changes. TCU (8-9, 0-1) never led by more than five, claiming 15-10 as its biggest lead, and battled the Lady Eagles throughout the opener.
With the game tied, 30-30, Dominika Szabo put down two consecutive kills to give TCU the opening advantage. She ended gave one with eight kills.
Southern Miss collected a .413 hitting average in game two. The Lady Eagles produced only three hitting errors to TCU?s six in the second game.
Three-straight hitting errors by the Horned Frogs allowed Southern Miss to claim a 10-9 lead, and the Lady Eagles never looked back, leading by as much as six, 19-13, in the second game. Bush led the team with seven kills, and Stephens produced kills on all four of her attacks.
The Lady Eagles dominated game three, starting off with an 8-0 start, led by Amy Truong?s three aces in her opening service. Southern Miss led by as much as 15 in the third game, 23-8, and appeared to limit the Horned Frogs to single digits for the game.
TCU charged with an 8-1 run to cut the lead at 24-16, but the Frogs could only come up with two points down the stretch, as Southern Miss won game three, 30-18. Bush and Tribble led the Lady Eagles? game-three dominance with five kills each.
Southern Miss won game four with character and tenacity, overcoming TCU?s 20-16 lead and experiencing three ties late in the game. The Frogs led 26-23, but two-straight kills by Files pulled the Lady Eagles within one, and a Southern Miss block knotted the score, 26-26.
Facing a 29-29 score, Bush put down her seventh kill of the game and gave the Lady Eagles the advantage, 30-29. A hitting error by TCU sealed the victory for Southern Miss, 31-29.
The Lady Eagles continue their journey through Texas, facing another C-USA opponent, Houston, on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.
