Houston Beats Lady Eagles, 3-0
HOUSTON, Texas ? The Southern Miss volleyball team had its three-match winning streak snapped, as Houston defeated the Lady Eagles in three-straight games. The match featured an exciting and competitive opening, but the Cougars? solid hitters took over in the following two games to seal a Houston victory.
Houston (10-4, 1-0 in C-USA) opened conference play this evening, after its Friday night match against Tulane was cancelled due to threatening weather. The Cougars kept their undefeated record against the Lady Eagles (10-8, 2-1) in tact, as they are 12-0 in the overall series against Southern Miss.
Jane Anne Karasek produced a match-best 33 kills with 12 digs to lead the Cougars. Jenny Tanneberger recorded 16 kills, and Jaci Gonzalez finished with 34 digs.
Nicki Tribble led the Lady Eagles with a double-double of 17 kills and 21 digs on the night. Andrea Bush claimed 16 kills and 19 digs.
Game one was the highlight of the match, as the opener finished in favor of Houston, 41-39. The first game featured 19 ties and eight lead changes.
After the score was tied 13-13, Southern Miss controlled the lead and claimed its highest spread of four, 22-18, during the stint. Houston went on a 6-2 run and tied the game, 24-24.
The score would be tied 15 times down the stretch, and the Lady Eagles experienced game point seven times. Houston faced game point three times. The Cougars put together three-consecutive kills and claimed the win in the opener.
Games two and three did not feature the same amount of drama. The Cougars were challenged in the second game, but never relinquished the lead. With the scored tied 17-17, Houston went on a 8-2 run to claim its highest lead in game two, 25-19, before winning 30-23.
Houston again took control early in game three. The Cougars held a 20-12 advantage and never allowed the Lady Eagles to get within eight points. Eight of Houston?s final 10 points were collected on kills.
Southern Miss returns home next weekend, hosting South Florida on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
