Cincinnati Defeats Lady Eagles, 3-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team lost its second-straight match, as Cincinnati defeated the Lady Eagles, 3-1, in the Payne Center.
Bridget Files led Southern Miss (13-11, 4-4 in C-USA) with 19 kills. Three other Lady Eagles recording double-figure kills, including Nicki Tribble with 11 and Amy Truong and Andrea Bush each with 10. Crystal Zane added 43 assists and 18 digs.
Julie DuPont led Cincinnati (15-6, 6-1) with 19 kills. Bonita Wise recorded 16 kills and a .412 hitting percentage, and Leslie Newell finished 13 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. Trish Ladusaw had game-high 29 digs, and Laura Lauder finished with 58 assists.
The Lady Eagles started the match winning the opener, 30-26. Southern Miss held the lead for the majority of the first game with the advantage never dipping under four points down the stretch. Tribble and Truong each collected five kills, as the Lady Eagles outhit the Bearcats, .204 to .174 in hitting percentage.
Cincinnati knotted the match in game two, 30-27. The Lady Eagles held an early lead at 9-2 and kept the lead throughout the match, leading at 24-18. The Bearcats used 7-1 run to knot the score, and down the stretch, Cincinnati took over to win the second game.
Wise used a .714 hitting percentage in game two, collecting five kills to lead the Bearcats. Dupont added four kills and seven digs.
Game three had the Bearcats winning 30-26. Cincinnati led for the majority of the game, with its biggest lead being seven, 19-12. The Lady Eagles closed the gap but could not overcome the Bearcats hitting, as UC recorded a .436 hitting percentage.
Three Bearcats collected five kills apiece. DuPont, Wise and Newell lead UC in hitting, and the Bearcats only recorded three hitting errors on the third game. Files recorded seven kills, leading the Lady Eagles.
Cincinnati controlled game four, winning the final game, 30-19. The Bearcats never trailed and forced the Lady Eagles to record a -.023 hitting percentage.
