Louisville Defeats Lady Eagles, 3-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team ended its three-match winning streak, losing to Louisville, 3-1, in the Payne Center.
The Lady Eagles (13-10, 4-3) ended the Cardinals? streak of winning 14-straight games, as U of L (17-3, 6-0) has swept its last four opponents, claiming an eight-match winning streak.
Bridget Files led Southern Miss with 16 kills and three aces. Andrea Bush ended with a double-double by recording 12 kills and a match-best 19 digs, and Nicki Tribble also completed the feat with 10 kills and 15 digs. Crystal Zane recorded 41 assists.
Bing Sun led Louisville with 16 kills, and Benny Flynn recorded 14 kills. Jennifer Craven finished with 45 assists.
Southern Miss held an early 10-6 lead in game one, but Louisville came back on four-straight Lady Eagle miscues, pulling within one, 11-10. USM then went on a 5-1 run, but the Cardinals responded with a 7-2 run to tie at 18.
Both teams traded points until Southern Miss strung together four straight to lead 25-23. The Lady Eagles were held scoreless down the stretch as the Cardinal scored the final seven to win game one, 30-25.
Game two featured Louisville taking an early 10-5 lead that featured a six-point run. The Cardinals increased its lead to 14-8, but Southern Miss responded with four-straight points, closing within two, 14-12. Once again, Louisville controlled at the end, using a .438 hitting percentage to win game two, 30-20.
The Lady Eagles never let down in game three, controlling the Cardinals in a 30-18 win. Southern Miss held a 16-7 advantage, but Louisville cut the lead by using an 8-4 run, as USM led 20-15. Southern Miss held strong in the end, outhitting the Cardinals, .279 to .093, in the third game.
Southern Miss held the lead early in game four, but Louisville fought back and took the lead at 12-11. The Cardinals slowly pulled away from the Lady Eagles, utilizing a 6-2 run to lead 18-13. Louisville held at the end, winning the fourth game and the match, 30-21.
Southern Miss hosts Cincinnati, tomorrow evening, Saturday, Oct. 26, in another C-USA match, at 7 p.m. The match will be held in the Payne Center.
