Lady Eagle Netters Face TCU, Houston This Weekend
HATTIESBSURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team travels to Texas this weekend, competing at TCU on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., and at Houston on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. The Lady Eagles (9-7 overall, 1-0 in C-USA) look to improve on their two-match winning streak, as well as their 1-0 start in conference play.
TCU (8-8) begins action in Conference USA this weekend. The Horned Frogs split matches against the Lady Eagles last season, with TCU winning the match in Fort Worth, 3-2, and Southern Miss claiming the 3-1 win in Hattiesburg. Overall, TCU leads the series with Southern Miss, 2-1, including a win during the 1997 season.
The Horned Frogs are also on a two-match winning streak, including a 3-2 win at Texas-Pan American and a 3-0 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last weekend. Dominika Szabo leads the team with 222 kills, and Tori Barlow leads in assists with 626.
Houston (9-4) also starts conference play this weekend. The Cougars hold a two-match winning streak as well, heading into the weekend. They defeated St. Mary?s, 3-1, on Sept. 22, and Baylor, 3-1, on Sept. 26. The Lady Eagles have never defeated the Cougars, as Houston holds an 11-0 series advantage.
With plenty of depth at the attack, the Cougars feature three solid hitters with Jenny Tanneberger (198 kills), Jane Anne Karasek (163 kills) and Laura Koster (152 kills). Donna Sellen is the leading setter with 506 assists.
Lady Eagles? Bridget Files was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 29, after recording a combined 30 kills and 22 digs in the past two matches. In USM?s C-USA opener over UAB, she recorded 18 kills and added 12 digs, while notching a .405 hitting percentage.
Andrea Bush leads the Lady Eagles in kills on the season with 259. Crystal Zane claims team-bests with 619 assists and 170 digs.
Southern Miss returns home, following the Texas trip, to face South Florida on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
