Macklin Named Southern Miss Women's Soccer Assistant
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? After serving one season as a volunteer assistant with the Southern Miss women's soccer program, Gail Macklin has been promoted to assistant coach.
As part of her duties, Macklin will help in recruiting and with conditioning during the spring workouts.
Macklin, 22, graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi in December with a bachelor's of science in sport administration and human performance.
A native of Glengormley, Northern Ireland, Macklin earned three letters with the Southern Miss soccer program, and was a member of the school's first team in 1997. She played in 40 matches in her career, primarily as a midfielder, and scored nine points.
"Gail earned the position through being a volunteer coach, and she was a big part of our soccer program," Southern Miss Head Women's Soccer Coach Matt Clark said. "The promotion was a very logical step for us. She also brings a solid soccer pedigree to the program that would be hard to find elsewhere."
In addition to her playing career with the Lady Eagles, Macklin also played one season at East Antrim Institution. She also has been a member of the Northern Ireland National Team six times.
As a coach, Macklin also has coached with the Mississippi Olympic Development Program and with the Hattiesburg Youth Soccer Association.
"I am excited about this opportunity," Macklin said. "I feel like I have an advantage because I have played here. Now I am able to get a taste of the administrative side of the program."
