Arkansas State Sweeps Southern Miss, 3-0
UT-Martin won the tournament with a 3-1 record followed by Ole Miss, after a 3-2 win over Arkansas State in the final match of the day. Arkansas State finished third followed by the Lady Eagles. Even though Ole Miss, Arkansas State and Southern Miss all finished with a 2-2 record, Ole Miss held the tie-breaker because of the head-to-head competition.
The Lady Indians (4-2) featured three players with double-figure kills. Caitlyn Mitchell led the squad with 14, and Michal Evers finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs.
Kelly Tribble and Lisa Downey led the Lady Eagles with nine kills each. Tribble also recorded three block assists. Tribble was named to the all-tournament team for her performance.
Southern Miss collected a 7-2 early lead in game three, but the Lady Indians used an 8-0 run to squander USM?s control. Arkansas State controlled the hitting in the final game, beating Southern Miss in hitting percentage .268 to .000. The Lady Eagles equaled their nine kills with nine hitting error.
The Lady Indians used a 12-2 run at the end of game two to win it 30-25. Southern Miss owned a 23-18 lead, but ASU came back to go up 2-0. The second game featured 11 ties and five lead changes.
Downey recorded seven kills to lead USM game two, committing no hitting errors on her 11 attacks. Caitlyn Mitchell and Katie Silliman each collected six kills for Arkansas State.
Arkansas State took the lead in the opening game with a commanding 30-17 win. The Lady Indians kept Southern Miss at bay, not allowing the Lady Eagles to come within six points once ASU reached double figures in scoring.
Southern Miss committed eight hitting errors in the first game, and Arkansas State held better hitting form with only two errors.
