Ole Miss Breaks Lady Eagles? Winning Streak
OXFORD, Miss. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team broke its four-game winning streak with a 3-1 loss to host Ole Miss in the Magnolia Invitational. The Lady Eagles (4-2) held early leads in every game, but the Rebels fought back to control the match in the final two games.
Kelly Tribble, once again, led all Lady Eagles with 19 kills. Brynn Olsson recorded 25 digs, and Lisa Downey collected 12 kills, 12 digs and four service aces. Nicki Tribble also finished with a double-double, tallying 10 kills and 18 digs.
Elena Garcia led Ole Miss (1-4) with 22 kills. Jamie Burns finished with 14 kills and 20 digs. The Lady Rebels recorded 16 team blocks, with Abby Hollander getting two block solos and five block assists.
Twelve ties and three lead changes were featured in game four, but Ole Miss fended off the Lady Eagles to win, 30-28. Southern Miss started the final game with a 6-2 lead, but that ended quickly as the Rebels took over after an 8-8 tie. Only once did Ole Miss surrender the lead, but the one-point, Southern Miss advantage did not last long.
Game three featured Ole Miss coming back after trailing 0-6 and 9-16 to win 30-23. The game was tied 16-16 and 19-19, and the Rebels put together a 6-1 run to control a 25-19 lead. The Lady Eagles committed eight hitting errors, and Ole Miss collected three service aces and three team blocks.
The Lady Eagles pulled off a 30-23 win in game two. Southern Miss game out of the gate with another 6-0 lead, but Ole Miss went on a 9-3 run to knot the score. USM regained the lead, following the 9-9 tie, with an 8-0 run, and the Rebels could not get closer than four points during the remainder of the game.
Kelly Tribble led game two with seven kills, while Olsson gave a solid defensive performance with eight digs. Garcia finished the second game with six kills to lead Ole Miss.
Southern Miss owned two five-point leads, as well as a seven-point lead at 20-13, in the opening game. However, Ole Miss pulled a late run and outscored the Lady Eagles, 17-8, to win 30-28.
Garcia led the Rebels with six kills in game one. Kelly Tribble also recorded six kills, as Olsson and Nicki Tribble collected four digs apiece.
The Magnolia Invitational continues on Saturday, Sept. 8. Southern Miss starts the day with a match against Samford at 10 a.m. The Lady Eagles finish the tournament competing against Arkansas State at 2:30 p.m.
All five teams in the Magnolia Invitational, including Ole Miss and Arkansas State, ended today?s slate with 1-1 records. Arkansas State claimed a win against Samford and a loss against Tennessee-Martin, and Samford defeated Ole Miss but lost to Arkansas State. Southern Miss defeated UT Martin earlier today.
