Lady Eagles Win Home Opener Against Nicholls State
Nicholls State?s Cheri White led all players with 16 kills and 16 digs. The sophomore also added five aces, and Shanda Johnson also produced a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs.
A tight battle in the fourth game ended in favor of the Lady Eagles, 30-24, giving them the match. Eight ties and nine lead changes were featured in the final game. The final knot landed at 22-22, and Southern Miss went on a 8-2 run to pick up its third win on the season, first at home.
Tribble produced her best game performance on the night in the final game, collecting six kills on nine hits, with a .556 hitting percentage. Truong led the Lady Eagles with 13 assists and three service aces in the final game.
Nicholls State collected its first win on the night in game three, 30-27. Committing only three errors in the game, the Lady Colonels were led by White?s five kills. Jen Wismann added four kills, with a perfect attack percentage, and Johnson also recorded four kills, while leading the team with 15 hits in the game.
Files produced eight kills for Southern Miss in the third game. The sophomore collected a .316 hitting percentage with 19 attacks.
Southern Miss controlled game two, 30-24, with Tribble spiking five kills off a hitting percentage of .444, five-of-nine on attacks. Melissa Shreve recorded three kills off four hits for a .750 attack percentage, and Brynn Olsson presented a solid defensive effort with five digs.
White led Nicholls State with four kills in the second game. Three Lady Colonels recorded three or more digs with Johnson leading the squad with five.
The Lady Eagles came from behind to win the first game in the match, collecting the 30-27 victory. Tribble registered three kills, while sister Nicki recorded two block assists in the opener.
Johnson and Wismann produced four kills apiece to lead the Lady Colonels who tallied more kills than Southern Miss, 13-11. The difference came at the serve, as the Lady Eagles put down four aces.
Southern Miss improves to 3-1 on the year, while Nicholls State drops to 0-5. The Lady Eagles travel to Ole? Miss for the Magnolia Invitational on Sept. 7-8. The round-robin tournament features Arkansas State, Tennessee-Martin and Samford.
