TCU Comes Back to Beat Lady Eagles
FORT WORTH, Texas ? The Southern Miss volleyball team owned a 2-0 game lead over TCU, but the Horned Frogs put on the power in the final three games to come back and win the match.
Marci King led TCU with 19 kills, and Jennifer Cuca finished with 16. Rachel Shirley collected five aces.
Kelly Tribble had 15 kills to lead the Lady Eagles. Lisa Downey ended with a double-double of 10 kills and 16 digs.
The Horned Frogs never trailed in the final game, winning the tiebreaker 15-11. They led 8-3 before the teams switched sides on the court and built the lead to a seven-point advantage, 13-7. Southern Miss committed six hitting errors in the game, recording a -.048 hitting percentage.
Game four had the Horned Frogs winning 30-21. TCU outscored the Lady Eagles 13-4 after a 17-17 knot. King collected four kills, and Rachel Shirley produced five digs and an ace to help the Horned Frogs? cause. Tribble, Downey and Andrea Bush led USM with three kills each.
TCU used a 12-3 closing run to collect a 30-22 win in game three. King?s five kills and Allison Lynch?s four kills led the Horn Frog attack. Bush led Southern Miss with three kills, but 10 hitting errors hindered the Lady Eagles? game-three performance.
Downey finished off game two with consecutive aces as Southern Miss collected a 30-23 win. Tribble led USM with four kills in the game, and Crystal Zane produced six digs.
Southern Miss owned an early 5-2 lead in the second game, but the Horned Frogs used an 11-3 run to take over at 13-8. The Lady Eagles, however, had the last run, outscoring TCU 8-0 to lead 15-13, and never trailing again in the game.
A tough battle began the match as the Lady Eagles took a 35-33 win in the opening game. TCU controlled the majority of the game, leading by as much as four, but USM made a comeback, tying the score four times after the Horned Frogs reached the 25-mark.
Tribble led the Lady Eagles with five kills. Downey claimed 10 digs on a tough defensive performance, and Southern Miss gave a better hitting performance with a .205 attack percentage to TCU?s .156.
This was the first conference match for both teams. Overall, Southern Miss is now 5-5 on the year, and TCU is 3-6.
