Southern Miss Prepares For Heat
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss Athletics Department has announced its plan for battling the heat on Saturday for its season-opening game against Oklahoma State at 11 a.m., at M. M. Roberts Stadium.
"We want to win the game, but we also are concerned about the comfort of our fans at Saturday's game," Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini said. "We want all our fans to feel that they can come out and support the team and not worry about problems associated with the heat. We appreciate all the time and effort donated by Forrest General Hospital and AAA Ambulance Service and their respective staffs, who would take time from their busy schedules to work the football game."
Hand fans, sponsored by Forrest General Hospital, will be provided to the first 10,000 fans at the gates for use during the game. There will be additional first aid stations with cool down rooms, containing bags of ice and water available. Additional nursing staff from Forrest General Hospital and the Southern Miss Health Services will be on hand for any emergencies that arise due to the heat.
"Heat-related illnesses may be decreased by avoiding long exposure to heat and sun and by preventing dehydration," said Mary Ann Lott, a Forrest General Hospital OnCall registered nurse. "Keep hydrated with water and sports drinks; avoid carbonated, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Dress in light colored, absorbent, loose fitting clothes.
"Early symptoms to be aware of include: dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps, nausea, profuse sweating, thirst and weakness. By following these guidelines, dehydration and heat exhaustion can be avoided.
"Registered nurses from Forrest General Hospital OnCall will be available at designated locations to offer medical attention and support. FGH OnCall also will provide hand fans to the first 10,000 people at the game."
AAA Ambulance service will provide a 16-foot air-conditioned trailer with beds on site to also take care of any fans who might suffer due to the heat. Coca-Cola, Southern Miss' concession provider, will also double its water and ice supply for all fans at the concession stands.
"We're not expecting any problems due to the heat at Saturday's game," Southern Miss Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Event Management Scott Carr said. "However, we are taking a proactive approach and plan for any problems that may occur on game day. With the additional first-aid stations and ambulance services, we believe we are prepared for any heat-related problems that may occur. Right now, the forecast looks good for Saturday."
