Golden Eagles Polish Game Plan
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi football squad suffered another injury during Monday's workout when starting strong tackle Jason Jimenez (6-2, 292, r-Jr., Orlando, Fla.) sprained a knee.
"We think the injury is similar to the one suffered by Joe Henley (Gainesville, Fla.) earlier in fall practice," said Head Coach Jeff Bower. "We'll have it evaluated and go from there." Jimenez suffered the injury early in today's practice, and was replaced by Myron Powe (Camden, Ala.).
In addition, kicker Don Urquhart (Mobile, Ala.) suffered a knee injury after missing all of last season, also with a knee injury. "He'll have to have an MRI test to determine the extent of the injury," Bower said.
On the plus side, Kenneth Johnson, who suffered a knee injury last week, was back at work today. "He'll have to show some marked improvement in the next couple of days to be a factor in the Oklahoma State game," Bower said.
"We've got to get some of our injured players ready to go, but as we have these injuries we need some of our younger players to step up. We tell our players all the time that they have to work hard and get ready to play, that their day is going to come, by graduation or injury or whatever, but you have to be ready."
The Eagles spent most of today's practice polishing a game plan that's already in. "We'll keep cutting back what we're doing as the week goes along, and work on execution," Bower said. "We've prepared for everything that we know we're going to see, but, like any opener, you haven't seen them on tape and you're just not sure what they're going to do, especially, say, from an offensive standpoint and maybe in the kicking game.
"I know the players worked hard all summer, and we've worked hard this fall. I know we'll play hard, and I have a good feeling about the game."
The Oklahoma State game that will start at 11 a.m., and will be televised by ESPN. Tickets are still available by going by the ticket office in the Ferlise Center on the Southern Miss campus, or by calling 601-266-5418.
