Southern Miss Softball Releases 2002 Schedule
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss Softball Coach Gay McNutt released the 2002 schedule for the Lady Eagles. The spring slate features appearances at three invitational tournaments, potentially 15 games against Southeastern Conference opponents, four scheduled games against Big 12 opponents and over 20 games against teams that made the NCAA Regionals last season, including a possible matchup against 2001 national-champion Arizona.
?This schedule is designed to test us early and see where we stand among some of the best teams in the country,? explained McNutt, who begins her second season at the helm. ?I?ve never been one to pad my schedule for my personal won-loss record. The idea behind this schedule is for us to finish strong at the conference tournament, hopefully take that into the regional tournament and end up putting us in the College World Series.
?It?s a very tough and demanding schedule, but the bright side is we have a lot of home games. Hopefully, it will be an attractive schedule that will bring a lot of people to Hattiesburg to watch us play.?
Sixteen home dates are listed, including non-conference games against Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Southern Miss will compete at Mississippi State?s Bulldog Classic, as well as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association?s Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., and Arizona?s Hildenbrand Tournament.
The Lady Eagles head to the Lone Star State for doubleheaders against Texas and Texas A&M, and trips to Alabama and LSU complete the non-league road contests. The conference home games feature DePaul, Louisville, Saint Louis and UAB coming to Hattiesburg, and Southern Miss goes on the road to face league-foes Houston, South Florida, East Carolina and Charlotte.
The Lady Eagles finished with a 46-21 record last season, collecting their second-consecutive Conference USA tournament title and making their third-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Southern Miss returns 10 players, and nine were added to the preseason roster.
Fall practices begin September 10, and the Lady Eagles will compete in Mississippi State?s Fall Tournament on Oct. 6 and will host their own on Oct. 13.
