Two More Television Football Games
Hattiesburg, Miss. - In addition to already-announced televised games against Oklahoma State, Alabama, Louisville, East Carolina and TCU, The University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Director Richard Giannini announced today that both the UAB and Louisiana-Lafayette games have been added to that list of televised games for the 2001 season.
The Sept. 29 UAB game at Roberts Stadium will start at 6 p.m., and is being televised regionally by Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS). CSS reaches nine southeastern states, 2.5 million households, and most of the major metropolitan areas in that area, including Hattiesburg-Laurel, Mobile, Ala., Huntsville, Ala., Birmingham, Ala., Nashville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga., among others. It also will be distributed nationally by ESPN Regional Television.
UAB and Southern Miss have played only once. The Golden Eagles took a hard-fought 33-30 double overtime decision from the Blazers last season in Birmingham.
The Sept. 22 game at Louisiana-Lafayette will be televised by College Sports SouthEast (CSSE), and will reach markets throughout the southeast. That game starts at 5 p.m., and will mark Southern Miss' first trip to Lafayette, La., since the Golden Eagles posted a 35-32 victory in the final game of the 1995 season.
"These additions give us at least seven television games this season," said Giannini. "A bowl game would make eight and there's still the possibility that some of our other regular-season games could be picked up as we go along. This is just further evidence of the consistent quality of the program Jeff Bower has built, and the high esteem in which that program is held nationally. With C-USA's new ESPN television agreement, more of our fans than ever before will be able to see the Golden Eagles, and the additional national exposure will help us earn more of the national honors we all feel we deserve."
