Two-a-Day Practices Continue at Southern Miss
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss continued its preseason preparation with two practices on Friday. The Golden Eagles will finish the three-day, NCAA-mandated, non-contact period with a pair of Saturday practices at 7:35 a.m., and 3:55 p.m., at the USM Practice Fields.
Southern Miss will host "Meet the Eagles/Media Day" on Sunday at 2 p.m., at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The Golden Eagles will begin the final week of two-a-day practices on Monday with full pads.
Head Coach Jeff Bower continued to be pleased with his teams efforts following Friday's workout. "We went 'good against good' today and gave the guys a little competition," Bower said. "It was a good day. We worked hard in both sessions. Their attitude has been good, and they are working hard.
"We have a few with cramps and strained muscles, but nothing serious. Chris Johnson (WR/Gramercy, La.) didn't do much during today's sessions, Darrell Bennett (WR/Lake Charles, La.) strained a hamstring so we held him and Kwantrell Green WR/New Orleans, La.) missed today with cramping.
"We have to get some of those guys out there working. We don't have a choice, some of those young guys have to help us. Daron Lawrence (WR/Orlando, Fla.) has a chance to help us. He is really improved. He was a walk-on as a true freshman last year and worked hard this summer. He worked on his speed and is a big target. He is doing some good things."
Otto Crawford had surgery to repair a fractured first metacarpal, and James Walley had surgery to repair a thumb ligament. Both went well today.
