Lady Eagles Go To C-USA Tournament
The Southern Miss softball team (42-18 overall, 15-6 in conference) travels to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Conference USA tournament. The Lady Eagles are the No. 2 seed, taking on No. 7 Saint Louis, in the first round, on Thursday, May 10, at 9 a.m. (CST), at Ulmer Field (1,000).
Southern Miss swept the Billikens in a home three-game series this season. In that series, Tammy Edwards stroked a .625 batting average, hitting five-for-eight and collecting three doubles, a run scored and three runs batted in.
Edwards was named C-USA Hitter of the Week, after batting .429 in the Louisville series last weekend. She was responsible for the game-winning hit in the final two wins over the Cardinals.
Melissa Cundiff was named the league's Pitcher of the Week. The freshman tossed a 3-0 shutout and came on in relief to collect her second win against UL. She went 11 innings in her two-game appearance, did not give up an earned run and surrendered six hits and two walks.
This was the second time this season the Lady Eagles claimed Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors in the same period. Amanda Brown and Felicia Gonzales received the respective honors on April 22.
Former USM pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl, who swatted .375 (three-for-eight, with a home run) against Southern Miss in the three-game meeting this season, leads Saint Louis in the tourney. She pitched one game, giving up three earned runs and six hits. The sophomore fanned eight Lady Eagles.
On the year, Bohnenstiehl is batting .280 with two home runs and 17 RBIs. Her pitching record stands at 14-11, and she also claims a 1.84 ERA and 205 strikeouts.
The winner of the USM-Saint Louis game will advance to play on Friday, May 11, at 9 a.m., facing the winner of South Florida-UAB. The loser of Thursday's game will play again that night at 5:30 against the loser of USF-UAB.
