DePaul Thwarts Lady Eagles, 5-0
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Friday night rain delay turned into a commanding victory for DePaul, as the Southern Miss softball team lost to the Blue Demons, 5-0, when the Conference USA tournament game resumed Saturday morning.
DePaul held a 1-0, two-inning lead when the game was suspended because of weather and added three runs in the top of the third. The Blue Demons collected four hits in the frame with Liz Bouck leading off with a single. She and Sarah Martz scored on Gina Ramacci's single.
Ramacci reached home on a double steal attempt, as Dana Jakusz stole third. Sarah Douglas, who scored last evening on Katy Kukman's sacrifice fly, crossed the plate in the sixth, when Lady Eagle pitcher Melissa Cundiff made an errant throw to first.
Martz (26-6) pitched the shutout for DePaul, recording three hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. She also hit two-for-three with one run scored. Douglas was also two-for-three in the game, with two runs scored.
Kenya Peters was one-for-one, and Amanda Brown finished hitting one-for-two. Cundiff (17-10) gave up 10 hits. Only three runs were earned, and she walked one and fanned two.
Southern Miss now faces the winner of the South Florida-Louisville game at 1 p.m. (cst). This game will be televised live in the Hattiesburg area on Comcast Charter Southeast.
The winner of that game will meet DePaul in the championship game at 3:30 p.m., today.
