Tulane Captures 2001 C-USA Women's Tennis Championship
HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- Second-seed Tulane posted an upset win over top seed UAB, winning the 2001 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, 4-0, Sunday at the Racquet Club.
Tulane grabbed the doubles point by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, 9-7 and 8-3. Tulane's Nancy Kockott posted the Green Wave's first win in singles at No. 4, winning 6-3, 6-4, over UAB's Natascha Immele.
Julie Morris, of Tulane, then came back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set, winning five consecutive games, to take a 6-3, 7-5 victory, at No. 2.
The Green Wave clinched the match at No. 5 when Maiko Cook took straight sets from UAB's Femke deBoer, 6-4, 6-1. The other matches were not completed.
UAB's No.1 player Mirela Vladuescu, who is ranked 22 nationally, was leading Tulane's Anna Monhartova, who is ranked 26, 6-1, 4-1, but that match was not completed. UAB finished the runner-up in the tournament.
Both Coughlin and Calderon ended the game hitting two-for-three to lead the Cardinals. Coughlin scored two runs, while Calderon added her 18th double on the year and an RBI.
