Football Opens Second Week of Spring Work
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi football squad
followed Saturday's first scrimmage of the spring with a productive Tuesday
workout, the first of four sessions scheduled in week two.
Following the two-hour-plus workout, Head Coach Jeff Bower reaffirmed his
earlier assessment of last Saturday's first scrimmage of the spring. "We ran the
ball well," he said. "We averaged over seven yards a carry, and that was good.
The effort was good. We tried to be physical, but some of our players have to get
better at that.
"We also had too many penalties and put the ball on the ground too many times.
Well have to improve in those areas. Watching the tape pretty much confirmed
what we felt on Saturday."
That Saturday scrimmage also produced some position shifts. Kendrick Key has
been moved from a guard spot to center, Travis Barber from center to the backup
spot at offensive guard and Seneca Jones from tight end to defensive guard. Buck
Miciotto also moves from a backup position to the number one spot at the quick
guard position.
"These changes are not unusual," Bower said. "One of the goals of spring work is
to get players in positions where they can make the greatest contribution."
The Golden Eagles will take Wednesday off, work Thursday and Friday and
scrimmage again Saturday as the team heads for an April 7 Black and Gold Spring
Game that will highlight a busy weekend of activities associated with the spring
game.
