Southern Miss Soccer Announces First Signing Class Of Clark Era
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Second year head coach Matt Clark announced
his
first-ever signing class for the Southern Miss women’s soccer
program.
Two defenders, one midfielder, one forward, and two goalkeepers
highlight
this year’s recruiting class, led by National Soccer Coaches
Association of
America All-American Lauren Prewitt and midfielder Katie Randolph.
Prewitt, one of the top 60 seniors in the nation according to USA
Today, is
an aggressive forward hailing from Taylor High School in Katy,
Texas. A
member of the Cy-Fair Dynamos club soccer team, Prewitt is a
dangerous
attacking player who could be one of the fastest players in the
Southern
Miss program.
Randolph, a center midfielder out of Mayde Creek High School in
Katy,
Texas, could challenge for a starting position next season. She
is a
member of the Klein Challenge Soccer Club.
Leslie Schoeplein, Kay Beth Costilow, Laura James, and Anna Snyder
join the
duo as the newest members of the Southern Miss soccer program.
"We have a strong recruiting class coming in and it is
well-balanced among
all the positions," Clark said. "Our main goals were increasing
our team
speed and finding another goal scorer."
Schoeplein, a sophomore transfer from Auburn University, will join
the
Southern Miss squad as a goalkeeper. While playing as a freshman
at
Auburn, Schoeplein played in four games, starting two, and had
seven saves
while allowing six goals.
A defender and midfielder from Vestavia Hills High School in
Birmingham,
Ala., Costilow is a versatile player who played club soccer for
Clark for
three years.
James, a defender from Madison Central High School is the lone
Mississippi
native in the new signing class. A member of the Jackson Futbol
club, she
is a versatile player who can play sweeper and outside defender.
Snyder rounds out the 2001 class. She was the keeper for St.
Mary’s
Episcopal School in Memphis, Tenn. One of the top keepers in the
region who
played with the Memphis Fury Soccer Club, Snyder could challenge
for the
starting slot next season.
The Southern Miss soccer team, which finished the 2000 campaign
with a 9-8
overall record and a 6-5 Conference USA record, enters its fifth
year of
competition in the fall.
