Kelly Named Verizon Academic All-District Second Team
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss quarterback Jeff Kelly has been named as a second-team quarterback on the Verizon Academic All-District VI University Division Football Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This is the third-straight year that he has been named to the district team.
The Verizon Academic All-District VI team is comprised of student-athletes from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Only members of the first team will be forwarded on to the national ballot.
Kelly, who displays a 4.0 grade point average as a second-year graduate student, studying business administration, graduated with his undergraduate degreee from Southern Miss with a 3.78 in finance in just three years. He will complete his graduate degree in December 2001.
Kelly was named to the prestigious National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame scholar athlete team on Nov. 1, and was a second-team Verizon Academic All-American in 2000. He has been named the Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year for the past two years.
Kelly has also been selected as a Phillips 66 classroom champion, Conference USA Academic Medalist three times, President's List (4.0 GPA) six semesters, Dean's List (3.25-3.99) four semesters and Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll every semester. He has been inducted into the Golden Key National Honor Society, Lamda Sigma Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Alpha Lamda Delta Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.
As a three-year starter at quarterback for the Golden Eagles, Kelly has led Southern Miss to a 21-10 record and two bowl victories (1999 Liberty Bowl and 2000 GMAC Mobile Alabama Bowl). In 2001, he has completed 130-of-233 passes for 1,583 yards and has thrown eight touchdowns. He also was named the 1999 Liberty Bowl Most Valuable Offensive Player.
Kelly currently ranks second on the Southern Miss all-time list for career completions (487), attempts (855), third in career touchdown passes (44), career passing yardage (6,065) and fourth in career total offensive yardage (4,473).
