New Orleans defeats Lady Eagles Volleyball, 3-2
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team lost its ninth-straight match, falling to New Orleans this evening, 3-2. Kelly Tribble collected 25 kills for a match-best to lead the Lady Eagles. Andrea Bush also passed the 20-mark with 21 kills and 15 digs.
The Privateers featured four netters with double-figure kills. Jennifer Cruz led with 16, Melissa Caravella recorded 15, Ann MacMillan claimed 14 and Mary Wanko finished with 10.
New Orleans (7-16) won the match with a commanding game-five performance. The Privateers came out of the gate with a 7-1 lead, winning 15-9. The Lady Eagles committed seven hitting errors in final game.
Southern Miss (7-16) never trailed in game four, tying up the match with a 30-24 win. The Lady Eagles owned a 19-10 advantage for their biggest lead. UNO pulled within two at 25-27, but USM remained in control. Kelly Tribble led the Southern Miss attack with four kills. Jennifer Cruz led UNO with five kills.
Game three had UNO winning 30-28. The Privateers owned a 20-12 lead, but the Lady Eagles pulled within one on two occasions down the stretch at 27-28 and 28-29. UNO never relinquished the lead, winning its second game of the match.
Bush recorded nine kills, and Tribble added six, but Southern Miss committed eight hitting errors and three serving errors in the third game. Cruz led UNO with five kills.
The Lady Eagles went on a 10-3 run at the end of game two to win 30-27. Kelly Tribble and Andrea Bush led the attack, as Tribble put down seven kills and Bush produced six. Caravella led UNO with six kills.
New Orleans took the early lead with a 30-27 win in the opening game. Four lead changes occurred with the Privateers taking over at 7-6. The Lady Eagles regained the lead at 18-17, but UNO came back at 25-24.
MacMillan recorded six kills to lead UNO. She committed no errors in the opener off eight attacks for a .750 hitting percentage.
Tribble led USM with seven kills and a .600 attack percentage. Bush and Files each added three kills apiece, and Nicki Tribble produced two aces.
Southern Miss will host Houston in a Conference USA match on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
