Cardinals Sweep Lady Eagles Volleyball Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team lost a 3-0 match to Louisville, tonight at Cardinal Arena. The loss increases the Lady Eagles losing streak to seven straight.
Bridget Files led USM (7-14, 2-9 in C-USA) with 11 kills, and Nicki Tribble collected a .467 hitting percentage, putting down eight kills on 15 attacks. The sophomore also finished with 10 digs.
Sonja Percan produced 14 kills and 10 digs to lead the Cardinals (15-4, 9-3). Lesley Drury added 13 kills with no hitting errors and an .813 hitting percentage. U of L out-blocked the Lady Eagles 14-to-2.
Louisville built an early first-game lead and increased the spread as action progressed. After getting off to a 10-point lead at 14-4 on a Percan kill, and forcing a USM timeout, U of L continued to gain momentum and led by as many as 18 before winning 30-15. The Cardinals hit a blistering .552 with 19 kills on 29 attacks and only three errors. USM hitting was ineffective with just 10 kills on 30 attacks.
Southern Miss seemed to rebound in the early part of the second game when they tied at nine. Louisvllle, then, went on an 8-1 run, maintaining a two-point lead down the stretch. The Cardinal hitting came back down to earth with a .179 percentage, but the blocking came alive with seven blocks in that game alone. After two games, Drury was on a school-record setting pace with a .917 hitting percentage.
In the final game, the Lady Eagles stayed close, never trailing by more than five points. Louisville?s blocking disrupted the USM offense with six blocks in the final game. The win came on two-consecutive points by Emily Roberson. Benny Flynn led all blockers with 10.
Southern Miss travels to face Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m.
