Saint Louis defeats Southern Miss Volleyball Team, 3-2
ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team lost, 3-2, to Saint Louis. The Lady Eagles captured the opening game, as well as game four, but the Billikens (7-8, 4-3 in C-USA) won in games two, three and five, handing USM (7-11, 2-6) its fourth consecutive loss.
Five Lady Eagles ended the match with double figures in kills. Kelly Tribble led the squad with 20 kills. Bridget Files collected 18, Melissa Shreve and Lisa Downey added 12 and Nicki Tribble finished with 10.
Colleen Hunter led Saint Louis with 29 kills, completing the match with a double-double with 19 digs.
Saint Louis pulled off the victory, controlling game five 15-8. The Billikens never trailed in the rubber game, owning a 6-1 lead at the opening.
Southern Miss faced match point for the Billikens in game four, 28-29, but pulled off the victory 33-31. The game displayed 14 ties, and the Billikens controlled the lead for the majority of the game. Southern Miss held strong, never allowing SLU to put the Lady Eagles away.
Tribble gave a perfect attack in the fourth game, with eight kills on 11 hits, .727 percentage. Hunter led SLU with eight kills and six digs.
Game three featured a tough down-the-stretch battle with the Billikens winning 33-31. Eleven ties and four lead changes were played out, and seven of those ties came on 20-20 and following.
Hunter collected 10 kills in the third game to Saint Louis, and Files led the Lady Eagles with five kills.
Saint Louis took a 20-9 run after a 7-7 tie to own a 27-16 lead in game two. Southern Miss battled down the stretch, but the Billikens never surrendered their command, winning the second game, 30-22.
Hunter, Ember Knobeloch and Brooke Minniear collected four kills apiece to lead SLU?s game two attack. Files was USM?s best hitter in the second game, also recording four kills.
A hard-fought game one ended in favor of the Lady Eagles, 30-27. Saint Louis owned a 12-5 lead, but Southern Miss went on a 19-9 run to capture a 24-23 lead and never turning back.
The Billikens were held to a .194 hitting percentage, and Tribble and Shreve led USM, which recorded a .275 attack percentage, with five kills each.
The Lady Eagles return home to face DePaul on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in Reed Green Coliseum.
