Ken Fischer (Baseball, 1955-57)
Ken Fischer was a three-year letterman at shortstop on the baseball team from 1955 to 1957...Grew up just a mile away from Wrigley Field in Chicago and was aggressively pursued by the Chicago Cubs out of Chicago Latin High School, but decided to come to Southern on a football/baseball scholarship...Injuries sidelined his football career, but he eventually became the starting shortstop for coach Clyde "Heifer" Stuart at Southern in an infield that included three M-Club Hall of Famers with Jim "Peanuts" Davenport at third base, Doug Barfield at second base and Hub Waters at first base...Was known as one of the best fielding shortstops to have played for Southern Miss and a player that was at his best at the plate in clutch situations...Following his career at Southern, he signed a minor league contract with the Cubs and played for two seasons in their minor league system.
