John Brechtel (Baseball, 1961-63 & Football, 1962)
Was a fierce competitor who was a three-year letterman in baseball and also earned a letter in football...Played first baseman and saw some action in the outfield...As a starter on the baseball team in 1961 he help lead the team to a 12-7 record...Hit .278 during the 1962 season, finishing third on the team in runs batted in...Ranked second on the team in runs batted in 1963...Played in 51 baseball games in his career...Came to Southern Miss as a quarterback in 1959, but switched to guard in 1960...Had a reputation for being one of the toughest hard-nosed players on the team And one of the most talented, but was often injured and never able to live up to his potential...Was a member of the 1962 UPI College division national championship football team.
