James Berry (Football Coach 1964-1972)
A three-year letterman, who was picked by his teammates as permanent captain of the 1963 Southerners, was noted as an outstanding defensive back throughout his career ... He also doubled as a quarterback ... Coach Pie Vann described Coach Berry as being "one of the finest football minds we had on our squad in a number of years in addition to being a fine leader and competitor" ... Berry began his coaching career assigned in assisting Maxie Lambright in coaching the backfield and shared scouting duties ... He eventually became the school's defensive back coach and his 1967 defense tied the all-time team record at the time of 21 interceptions and his 1965 and 1971 teams each had 20 interceptions ... His off the field duties included supervision of Vann Hall and equipment manager ... A three-year letterman as a player from 1961-1963, a big strong serious guy who was used mainly on defense ... He was a member of the 1962 UPI College Division National Championship Team.
