Gene Carlisle (Mascot, 1963-64)
Gene Carlisle is the first Spirit/Cheerleader to be selected for the M-Club Sports Hall of Fame. Carlisle was elected as "General Nat" and served as the student body's spirit leader in 1963-64. One of Carlisle's duties as spirit leader was to lead, by horseback, the cheerleaders and the football team on the field, and during pep rallies. In 2005, the football field was renamed Carlisle-Faulkner Field, honoring Carlisle for his donation that went to the installation of the new Momentum Turf playing surface. Over the past 40 years, Carlisle has donated several hundred thousand dollars to the University of Southern Mississippi. He served as former chairman of the College of Business and Economic Development's Business Advisory Council, as well as is currently on the Board of Directors for both the University's Foundation and the Athletic Foundation. He chairs the campaign to raise funds for the College of Business and Economic Development's new building, and was named the College's Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2002. He was inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi Hall of Fame in 2003.
