Bio
Eddie Hicks, a former Golden Eagle defensive standout, made his return to Hattiesburg in Spring 2018 by joining Jay Hopson's staff as the cornerbacks coach.
Hicks was an All-Conference USA performer from 2008-09 as a Golden Eagle and made the league's all-freshman team in 2006. He also led the team in interceptions his last two seasons, and his 87-yard return against East Carolina in 2006 is the fourth-longest in program history.
Hicks has served as the cornerbacks coach at Austin Peay the last two years, with the 2017 team accomplishing one of the great turnarounds in college football history. The Governors won eight games after having one victory the previous four years and did so with the No. 17 defense in FCS. While there, he coached alongside fellow former Southern Miss standout Todd Pinkston.
The Clarksdale, Mississippi native was at Murray State in 2015 as the defensive backs coach and previously held the defensive quality control assistant position at Cal (2014), and served as a graduate assistant at Cincinnati (2013) and Alcorn State (2012).
Hicks has been earning his coaching-world stripes since breaking in at Alcorn State, which was also Hopson's first year as the head coach. That season, Hicks helped coach a defense that led the Southwestern Athletic Conference in pass defense and ranked fourth in FCS, allowing a mere 156.0 yards per game.
The next season, Hicks joined Cincinnati and was on staff for one of the nation's best defenses that ranked ninth in total defense (315.6 ypg), 14th in scoring defense (21.0 ppg) and 25th in pass efficiency defense (116.75). Cornerback Deven Drane earned All-American Athletic Conference second-team honors working with Hicks.
After a year at Cal, Hicks joined the Murray State coaching staff where he tutored DeQuinten Spraggins to 90 tackles--most by an OVC defensive back--and All-OVC honors in 2015.
He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 2010. Hicks and his wife, JoTrina, have two sons--Eddie IV and Jayvion.
