HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss football completes the non-conference portion of its slate this Saturday when they play host to Jax State at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Game time is set for 6 p.m., and can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Tickets for the contest can be purchased at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
The Golden Eagles (2-2) look to rebound following a 30-20 setback at Louisiana Tech last weekend, while the Gamecocks head to The Rock with a 2-2 mark after defeating Murray State 45-10 at home last weekend.
Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting in the series with Southern Miss holding a 2-1 record. Jax State won last year's meeting in Jacksonville 44-7, while the Golden Eagles captured a 58-0 shutout during the 1936 campaign and a 65-0 blanking in 1946 in the other two meetings. Both of those Golden Eagle triumphs came at home.
Heading into the game, the Golden Eagles are averaging 28.3 points per game after scoring over 20 points just five times a year ago.
The offensive explosion has happened thanks to Sun Belt Conference preseason Offensive Player of the Year Braylon Braxton. The senior from Frisco, Texas, has thrown for 1,084 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 128 more. Braxton is the first Golden Eagle quarterback to throw for over 1,000 yards in the first four games of a season since 2020.
Sixteen different Southern Miss players have caught passes with five having 10 or more catches. Carl Chester leads the way with 13 grabs for a team-best 211 yards, while Elijah Metcalf is next at 12 for 153 yards. Micah Davis holds 11 catches to go along with a team-best three touchdown receptions, while both Bralon Brown and Jeffery Pittman have added 10 grabs during the year.
Pittman also ranks second on the team in rushing with 126 yards to go along with a team-high two rushing scores.
On defense, the Golden Eagles have been led by Chris Jones who has 46 tackles this season. Michael Montgomery ranks second with 39 stops, followed by Ian Foster with 29 and Josh Moten 26.
Following the Jax State game, the Golden Eagles will enjoy their first of two bye weeks during the season and will return to action with a Thursday night Sun Belt tilt at Georgia Southern. That game will take place at 7 p.m. CT and be shown on ESPN2.
