LAFAYETTE, La.-Southern Miss Softball (23-28, 10-13 Sun Belt) fell to a late fifth inning surge as Louisiana (28-24, 14-10 Sun Belt) claimed a 4-2 victory Saturday.
The Golden Eagles briefly held a lead in the fifth, but the Ragin' Cajuns responded with three hits and three runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim the advantage and close out the game.
Five Golden Eagles recorded hits in the contest: Hannah Christian, Carrie Green, Natalie Taylor, Nealy McManus, and Madison Moak.
Mallory Wheeler earned her 12th win of the season, throwing over six innings for the Ragin' Cajuns. Southern Miss starter Kayla Giardina took the loss, going four innings with six hits and two earned runs allowed.Â
Louisiana struck first after three scoreless frames, loading the bases with no outs before Laney Credeur delivered an RBI single. The Golden Eagles limited the damage, stranding all three runners to keep it a 1-0 game.
In the top of the fifth, Taylor and Moak ignited the offense with back-to-back singles as pinch hitters, bringing up the top of the order. Christian and Green followed with consecutive RBI hits to give Southern Miss its first lead of the weekend at 2-1.
Louisiana responded in the bottom of the inning, putting two aboard with early singles. Jana Lee entered in relief, but the Ragin' Cajuns tied the game on a Southern Miss error and pulled ahead on a two-RBI single by Emily Smith.
McManus kept hope alive with a two-out single down the left field line in the seventh to bring up the tying run, but a final pop-up sealed the series for Louisiana.
