HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (11-13, 0-0 Sun Belt) saw its six-game winning streak come to an end Sunday, falling 6-5 to North Dakota State (12-12, 0-0 Summit League) in the final game of the Golden Eagle Classic.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles' offense tallied 10 hits, marking their fourth consecutive game with double-digit hits, the longest streak since 2006. Over the weekend tournament, Southern Miss amassed 55 hits, with 17 players contributing.
Carrie Green led the way Sunday with a career-high three-hit performance, while Mikaila Fox recorded her third multi-hit game of the weekend. Claire Ginder added her second two-hit game of the season, and Maddie Weeks extended her hitting streak to 10 games, the longest of her Southern Miss career and the team's longest active streak.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Fox and Weeks came around to score on a two-RBI single by Jana Lee. However, North Dakota State quickly responded with three RBI singles to take the lead. The Golden Eagles evened the score in the second when Green drove in Ginder with an RBI single.
Freshman Olivia Christian provided three shutout innings in relief of Lee, but the Bison broke through in the sixth with a pair of runs to regain the lead.
Ryanna Valdivia answered in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff solo home run that bounced off the top of the outfield wall, trimming NDSU's lead to one. However, the Bison extended their advantage again in the seventh on an RBI double by Rylee Henderson for her third hit of the game.
The Golden Eagles put together a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, putting two runners in scoring position after a single from Weeks and a double from Fox. Abbi Troquille brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, but NDSU reliever Kaitlyn Dunford closed the door with a strikeout and a game-ending pop-up to seal the Bison's fourth straight win of the tournament.
Piper Reed (3-1) earned the win for NDSU, throwing 103 pitches over six innings, while Dunford secured her second save.
