HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss men's tennis put together a gritty week at the ITA Southern Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa (Oct. 9–14), stacking quality wins, playing pressure points, and walking away with a Round of 16 finish in both doubles and singles.
The headline came in doubles, where Saheb Sodhi and Eric Perkowski clicked early and never really let go. They knocked off a Louisiana pair to open, then backed it up with another tight main draw win to punch their ticket to the Round of 16. The run ended against an Ole Miss tandem, but the duo's body of work, big first-serve looks, clean returns at the deuce-side, and timely poaches, looked like a blueprint for spring doubles points.
Sodhi also carried the flag in singles, grinding through back-to-back three-setters to reach the Round of 16. It wasn't just the results, it was the way he did it. He problem-solved, tightened the margins, and flipped the patterns to his forehand. In the third sets he moved forward decisively, took the ball early, and trusted his conditioning.
Around the draw, Jay Temming and Ritabrata Sarkar battled through a coin-flip opener in doubles that went to a breaker. Exactly the kind of match that sharpens late-set decision-making. Sarkar also put in work in qualifying singles earlier in the week, while Olle Noltorp logged valuable main-draw reps against SEC and Sun Belt-heavy competition.
This week felt like a step forward. The guys repeatedly built 30-all/30-40 chances and cashed enough of them to keep momentum on their side. When the margins got thin, they backed their patterns and stayed aggressive, exactly what you want at a regional with this depth.
