HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team returned to the practice fields Friday morning with a two-hour practice in shells on the game field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles, who have been running practice during the early morning hours to beat the day's heat, enjoyed a dry and cooler day with a little bit of a breeze for workout eight of its fall camp.
Coach Will Hall's squad enjoyed a solid day of getting situational work in during the practice as well as emphasizing situations with empty sets.
"We enjoyed good situational work this morning," said Hall. "We worked a lot of empty and all the situations of empty: empty, motioning to empty, reloading from empty. We also worked third-and-short for the first time and got that situation covered and got down in the high red zone again and emphasized that. The offense made a lot of explosive plays which were good for our offense, but we've got to get that shored up on defense and we will.
The practice set up the team's first scrimmage Saturday morning and will give the Golden Eagle coaches a chance to evaluate players in game-like settings.
"We've got a big day tomorrow," said Hall. "We're going to try and go around 90 snaps, which is about two-and-a-half quarters and probably about 45 snaps with each group. We'll do it at a fast pace to really test our mettle and our conditioning."
Saturday's practice is also a membership day for the To The Top Collective.
"Tomorrow is our To The Top Collective membership day for those people," said Hall. "If you haven't already joined, join today. It only costs 17 dollars a month. Then you can come to practice tomorrow, you can mingle with our players, you can meet them. Click that link and bring your kids tomorrow. We'll let them come out to the middle and break it down with us. We need you and to keep growing that."
Season tickets for the six Southern Miss home games can be purchased by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office at the corner of 4th Street and Golden Eagle Way weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
