HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Twenty-one days after Southern Miss football reported for fall camp, the Golden Eagles officially concluded their final practice of the grueling three-week stretch on Tuesday morning on Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Fourth-year head coach Will Hall was not shy about what he saw this fall camp compared to previous ones. Hall pointed out the talent that was brought in this off season, which was part of one of the Sun Belt's top recruiting classes.
"Man, it just looks like real football more than any time we've been here," Hall said. "We can go good-on-good, stay off the ground and we've just got better players. They have developed and grown since they've been here. You know, it's just fun to coach these guys."
Now that Southern Miss has built its identity on the field over the past 21 days, it's time for the Golden Eagles to turn their attention to the academic side of being a student-athlete. The University's first day of school is Wednesday and Hall has made it an emphasis for his players to excel in the classroom.
"Tomorrow will be the first day of school and we want to get off to a great start," Hall said. "We want to make sure we attack that day with everything we've got. We are devoting that day just to school and we've made a constant effort to really get our academics first-class here."
With school starting on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles will not practice that day. They will restart football activities the following day with an open practice before returning to a normal game-week schedule the following Monday ahead of the season opener at Kentucky.
Southern Miss' opener on Saturday, Aug. 31, in Lexington is a 6:45 p.m. CT contest. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network and can be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Season tickets for the six Southern Miss home games can be purchased by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office at the corner of 4th Street and Golden Eagle Way weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
